The Basic Development Environment (BDE) is a set of C++ libraries and supporting tools intended to form the foundation of large-scale commercial applications on a variety of popular platforms.

The mission of BDE’s designers is to raise the bar for what should be expected of reusable software and to engage with other like-minded software engineers to advance a world-class platform suitable for large-scale, industrial software product development. Two BDE libraries, BSL (Basic Standard Library) and BDL (Basic Development Library) have been released under a permissive open source license in order to encourage experimentation, enhancement and adoption by the global C++ development community.
